Welcome to
Lorraine Cathey
Fiber Works

My inspiration comes from the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, the abundance of waterfalls in the region,  and the amazing scenery and overlooks  along the  Blue Ridge Parkway.

All landscapes are needle felted onto a prefelt backgraound which serves as a "canvas" for the scene.  Needle Felting is a dry felting technique using wool roving and needles which have tiny barbs to push the fiber in place.  When I'm happy with the needle felted image I wet felt the piece using warm soapy water and agitation.  Agitation is accomplished by placing the piece on bubble wrap and rolling up around a piece of PVC pipe and rolling about 500 times.  This merges all the fibers tightly and forms one solid piece of felt.
Occasionally I will do free motion stitching to accentuate certain areas to add additional texture.  Fiber paintings are unique and the detail that can be achieved is amazing.

I hope you enjoy browsing through the Gallery pages.  If you would like more information or pricing on any of the work featured please use the contact page. Enjoy.
